1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco
Tim Keefe

The N403 Yum Yum Tobacco issue is an extremely rare set of cards, distributed by August Beck & Co. of Chicago, IL. The set features two distinctly different varieties of cards. The first variety, generally more desired by collectors, are actual photographic portraits. The second variety features full length poses and are drawings vs. photographs. So far, over 50 different combinations of the two varieties are known.

Tim Keefe was a Hall-of-Fame pitcher whose career spanned 14 years, from 1880 to 1893. In his rookie year, 1880, he established the record for the lowest E.R.A., an amazing 0.86. In his best season, 1888, he won 35 games, had an incredible 1.74 E.R.A., and won the NL Pitching Triple Crown. Remarkably, he finished his career with two 40-win seasons, and four different 30-win seasons.

The offered card is an extreme rarity. It is the highest graded example at SGC, while PSA has yet to certify a single example, of any player, from the N403 set. The overall quality is superb. The photographic image is crisply focused and exhibits good contrast against the light background shading. The corners have just a slight amount of even wear, and the surfaces are extremely clean with no notable flaws.
