1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug
Buck Ewing (Cleveland on Shirt)
SGC NM 84

One of the key cards in the classic N300 Mayo's Cut Plug set of 1895. This is the "Cleveland on Shirt" variety of Hall-of-Fame great Buck Ewing. Another card of Ewing, the "Cincinnati on Shirt" variety, was also issued within the Mayo set.

William "Buck" Ewing, one of the 19th century's greatest players, enjoyed a stellar 18 year career (1880 - 1897) in the big leagues. In addition to playing, he also managed for seven seasons. Ewing had a career batting average of .303, and was regularly among the league leaders in triples, in an era when triples were the gold-standard for measuring a player's offensive production. Ewing was also a prolific base stealer. But perhaps more than anything else, Ewing was known for his tremendous defensive prowess at the catcher's position, especially his ability to throw out opposing base runners. Ewing was among the first 19th century players to be elected to the Hall-of-Fame in 1939.

The offered example is the finest graded N300 Mayo Ewing, at either SGC or PSA. The card's quality is even more impressive when you consider that Mayo's are one of the most difficult sets ever issued to find in high-grade. This copy has four squared corners that show just a touch of wear. The black borders are extraordinarily clean for the issue. The surface quality is absolutely superb, with no imperfections to note. The printing and image quality are both unimprovable. And the card retains a full unbroken layer of sheen atop the surface of the paper. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire, perhaps, the finest known example of this landmark 19th century rarity.
