1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinets
#561 Walter Johnson

This very rare and desirable cabinet card was issued by the Pinkerton Tobacco Company in 1911. These cards were offered as product premiums which were available in exchange for sending in coupons found in various tobacco brands manufactured by Pinkerton. They are actually two-piece cabinet cards, consisting of a black and white player photograph affixed to a separate mount. Pinkerton cabinets have been found with a variety of mount types and sizes. Although a precise number is not known, there are several hundred different player/varieties thought to exist.

Hall-of-Fame legend Walter Johnson, perhaps the greatest pitcher in the history of baseball, is featured on this example. Johnson enjoyed an absolutely dominating 21-year career, all with the Washington Senators. He was a 12-time American League strikeout champion, he had 11 seasons with a sub-.200 ERA, he was a two-time MVP Award winner, and a one-time World Series champion. Johnson still remains the all-time career leader in shutouts (110), second in career wins (417), and a member of the 3,000 strikeout club.

The offered example features a beautiful actual photograph of Johnson, affixed to a thick gray cardboard mount. The photograph is extremely bold with outstanding contrast, and the mount is attractive and in superb condition. The entire card is very clean, visually appealing, and presents much nicer than its technical grade would suggest.
