1917 Collins-McCarthy
#80 Rogers Hornsby
PSA EX-MT+ 6.5

This very scarce 1917 Collins-McCarthy card is the rookie issue of Hall-of-Fame great Rogers Hornsby. Designated as E135, this set was distributed by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. of California and featured a total of 200 cards - numbered in alphabetical order. The cards came with the following reverse formats: advertising for Collins-McCarthy, advertising for a number of other regional businesses, and blank-backed (the offered example).

Rogers Hornsby was one of the greatest hitters in the history of major league baseball. He had an ability to hit with power and for average. In 1922, he became the only player ever to hit at least 40 home runs and maintain at least a .400 batting average in one season. Over a 23-year playing career (1915-37), Hornsby compiled a lifetime batting average of .358 - the highest in National League history! He won two MVP Awards, and was the only player ever to win two National League Triple Crown Awards.

Tracing its roots to the collection of Midwesterner Eugene McCoid, the offered example is of the very highest quality. Certified as EX-MT+ 6.5 by PSA, this copy has borderline NM-MT appeal. It is near perfectly centered with outstanding corner quality (just a touch of rounding on the upper left), pristine surfaces, bold crystal-clear printing, a spectacular image of Hornsby, and an absolutely blinding glossy finish. This is one of just three examples graded by PSA (for all reverse formats!), the other two certified Authentic and VG 3.
